Mainoo’s United Future in Doubt

The Athletic is reporting that Kobbie Mainoo is now open to leaving Manchester United before the transfer window closes, after weeks of uncertainty over his role.

How has the situation turned so quickly, and where next for the 20-year-old midfielder?

The Amorim problem

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has been rigid in his use of a back three with a double pivot in midfield. This structure has left Mainoo on the fringes. He’s yet to start a league game this season, having barely featured since returning from a muscle injury in April.

The tactical clash is clear. Mainoo is one of United’s best ball carriers, averaging over 2.5 progressive carriers per 90 minutes and completing 65% of his take-ons. In tight central areas, he can beat a man and drive through pressure, a rare trait for a young midfielder.

Amorim, though, prefers to progress play with quick passing through the lines. Mainoo’s short distribution is tidy, but he lacks the range of someone like Adam Wharton to execute line-breaking passes off either foot with ease. That stylistic gap has left Amorim reluctant to reshuffle his midfield to fit Mainoo in.

What’s next?

Behind the scenes, contract negotiations have stalled. Talks over a new deal, centred around a wage increase, haven’t progressed. The club are unwilling to meet his demands, raising the prospect of a sale before Monday’s deadline.

A €50m fee has been quoted. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both tracked Mainoo earlier in the window but never formalised an interest. Domestically, that price point leaves few obvious moves beyond Chelsea or Manchester City.

United’s risk

United have historically built around academy graduates of Mainoo’s calibre. Offloading him this early into his career, particularly after he has already shown he can perform at the top level, would be a gamble that reflects more on the club’s muddled direction than the player’s limitations.

Mainoo remains an elite ball-carrying midfielder who is composed under pressure. Whether he fulfils his potential at Old Trafford or elsewhere now depends less on his ability and more on Amorim’s system and United’s resolve.
