Team of the Week – December 5th to 7th

Sam Cooper Score 90

Goalkeeper: Ionut Radu (Celta Vigo)

Real Madrid are in a mini crisis but take nothing away from Celta Vigo who secured their first win over Real in over a decade. The Romanian stopper Radu made seven crucial saves to protect the clean sheet and three points.

Defence: Matty Cash (Aston Villa)

A statement win for Aston Villa. Right-back Matty Cash opened the scoring with a well-timed run into the box, having previously had another opportunity blocked by Declan Rice. A third league goal of the season for the Polish defender.

Defence: Rúben Dias (Manchester City)

After a tame start to the season, City are breathing down Arsenal’s neck. Rúben Dias scored his second goal in four games with a Kompany-esque thunderbolt from outside the area. Sunderland didn’t pose too much of an attacking threat, yet when called upon Dias won all four of his aerial duels.

Defence: Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund)

Dortmund extended their unbeaten league form to six games with a 2-0 win over top-four hopefuls Hoffenheim. Schlotterbeck, deployed as the left centre-back in Kovac’s 3-4-2-1, scored a well-taken goal to secure the three points.

Defence: Héctor Fort (Elche)

Two assists and a clean sheet for the young Spaniard on loan from Barcelona. Having scored in the Elche’s previous game in the Copa del Rey, Fort’s performances are starting to raise the interest from his parent club.

Midfield: Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

Pep Guardiola doesn’t make comparisons to Lionel Messi lightly. For the Spaniard to liken Rayan Cherki to the little magician shows how highly he rates the Frenchman. Cherki contributed two assists against Sunderland ,taking his tally to six assists and three goals across all competitions.

Midfield: Xavi Simons (Tottenham Hotspur)

Among Simons’ best performances in a Spurs shirt to date. After a slow start to life at White Hart Lane, against Brentford the young attacking midfielder showed what he is capable of. He set up Richarlison for the opener, before a jinxing solo run from his own half led to his first league goal for his new team.

Midfield: Bruno Guimarães (Newcastle)

Bruno joins an illustrious list of players to score directly from a corner, after his inswinger caught out his former teammate Martin Dúbravka. The goal topped off an impressive performance from the Brazilian, who won six duels and three tackles, while also leading the way in terms of most touches and shots across the 90 minutes.

Forward: Ferran Torres (Barcelona)

A first-half hat-trick from Ferran Torres set Barcelona on the way to three points against Real Betis, despite the home side’s late comeback. Torres’ versatility across the front three is proving a major asset to Hansi Flick as he contends with managing Yamal and Lewandowski’s minutes.

Forward: Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig)

Leipzig’ 6-0 demolition of European hopefuls Eintracht Frankfurt was the standout result from the weekend. Yan Diomande scored a second half hat-trick to extend the home side’s lead, taking his league tally to six goals for the season.

Forward: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (PSG)

They might have won it all last season, but PSG are trailing Lens in Ligue 1 this season. Having lost against Monaco last week, PSG returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 win over Rennes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring before adding a second midway through the second half.
