Players Who’ve Played for Chelsea and Liverpool

Sam Cooper Score 90

Chelsea host Liverpool in the most compelling Premier League fixture of the weekend. It is a clash between two out-of-form English giants, both looking to bounce back from disappointing defeats last week.

In recent seasons, multiple players have pulled on the jerseys of both Chelsea and Liverpool – with varying levels of success.

Mohamed Salah

Salah’s story at both clubs couldn’t be more contrasting. At Chelsea, he was a raw winger who struggled for minutes and form, scoring just twice in 19 games. But at Liverpool, the Egyptian King became a sensation.

With blistering pace, ruthless finishing and an eye for the spectacular, Salah has racked up close to 250 goals and entered the conversation for the greatest Liverpool player of the Premier League era.

Fernando Torres

Similar to Salah, Torres enjoyed a significantly more successful time at Anfield than he did at Stamford Bridge. 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool belies the full impact Torres had at Liverpool; he tormented defenders and was one of the most impactful strikers of his generation before his infamous switch to Chelsea in January 2011.

Whether it was injuries, poor form or the change of system, Torres never consistently hit the same levels he delivered at Liverpool. However, he still etched himself into Chelsea folklore with an iconic goal against Barcelona in the semi-final of the Champions League before lifting the trophy in 2012.

Raheem Sterling

Sterling broke through into Liverpool’s starting eleven under Brendan Rodgers, earning a spot next to Suárez and Sturridge. His pace, direct running and end product made him one of England’s brightest prospects before his big money move to Manchester City.

Having won four league titles with City, Sterling made the move to Chelsea. Whilst he is still contracted to Chelsea, Maresca has made clear there is “no way back” for Sterling back into the first-team squad.

Daniel Sturridge

What a player Sturridge was in his prime.

After a stop-start spell at Chelsea, Sturridge moved to Liverpool where for a short while he was amongst the most deadly strikers in Europe. His partnership with Luis Suárez is still fondly remembered by the Anfield faithful – the duo almost delivered a league title in 2013/14.

Injuries ultimately blighted his career, but his Anfield peak will live long in the memory.

Joe Cole

Joe Cole is the first name on the list who enjoyed greater success at Stamford Bridge. His Chelsea days brought Premier League titles and regular England caps; his Anfield chapter was less successful. In his prime, Cole was a technically gifted midfielder but injuries and inconsistencies limited his time at the top.

Nicolas Anelka

The definition of a footballing journeyman, Anelka enjoyed spells at both clubs. As a young talent, Anelka joined Gérard Houllier’s Liverpool on loan in 2002 where he returned five goals. Anelka enjoyed the longest stint of his career at Chelsea, making 184 appearances across four years. In that time, Anelka won a Premier League and two FA Cups, as well as the league Golden Boot in 2008/09.

Yossi Benayoun

A creative midfielder with a knack for big goals. Benayoun was a fans favourite at Liverpool for his work ethic and memorable strikes. His later move to Chelsea never quite replicated that form but he was a respected professional within the squad and contributed towards their Europa League triumph.

Fabio Borini

Borini’s time at both clubs was relatively fleeting. At Chelsea he was a promising academy talent but never broke through into the first team on a regular basis. Brendan Rodgers brought him to Liverpool but he struggled for consistency in front of goal. Following his departure from Liverpool, he joined Sunderland before later playing for AC Milan.

Raul Meireles

Meireles had a short but memorable time at Liverpool, only staying for the season but winning their Player of the Season award in 2011. That summer, he moved to Chelsea where he continued his all-action performances in their midfield. Big in the challenge and prone to a long-range strike, Meireles was an enjoyable midfielder to watch for both sides.

Victor Moses

Moses joined Chelsea from Wigan Athletic as an exciting young talent on the wing, but initially struggled to deliver on his potential. A loan move to Liverpool got off to a great start with a goal on his debut, but only started nine league games as he found minutes hard to come by.

It wasn’t until his re-invention as a wing-back under Antonio Conte that Moses became a regular starter for Chelsea as part of their 2016/17 title winning season. Having spent many spells on loan across Europe, Moses most recently turned out for Luton Town during the 2024/25 season.

Dominic Solanke

Solanke was a highly-rated Chelsea academy graduate who made the switch to Liverpool in 2017 in search of regular football. 1 goal in 27 games was a poor return, but Bournemouth had seen enough to shell out €21.20m for the striker. His time at the Vitality Stadium was a success, with Solanke then moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for €64.30m.
