Team of the Week – October 17th to 19th

Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer (Inter)

Roma had scored in all but one of their Serie A games heading into Saturday’s encounter with Inter Milan.

Inter’s number one Sommer ensured that Roma’s good form wouldn’t continue though, making five saves, including three in the space of three minutes.

Defence: Reece James (Chelsea)

The final nail in Ange Postecoglou’s reign at Nottingham Forest was hammered home by Reece James, who volleyed home after Matz Sels failed to deal with a corner.

Having laid the ball off to Pedro Neto to thump in a free kick, James left the City Ground with two goal contributions and a clean sheet.

Defence: Nordi Mukiele (Sunderland)

Both full backs of Sunderland combined to open the scoring against Wolves, with Mukiele ghosting into the box to deliver the finish.

Having won 10 out of 11 aerial duels, five out of eight ground duels and two out of three tackles, it was a fantastic performance all around for the former PSG defender.

Defence: Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

A huge win at Anfield for Manchester United, and it was their unlikely hero at the back who sealed it.

Maguire’s late winner was the headline moment, but his commanding display throughout, particularly in the air, stood out. The England international won five aerial duels and was instrumental at both ends of the pitch.

Defence: Alejandro Grimaldo (Leverkusen)

Leverkusen’s turbulent summer hasn’t dented Alejandro Grimaldo’s form.

The Spanish full-back was unstoppable in a 4-3 thriller, scoring twice and winning 9 of 12 ground duels. His energy, intelligence and finishing quality summed up why he’s among Europe’s best attacking defenders.

Midfield: Nico Paz (Como)

Cesc Fàbregas’ Como continue to impress in Serie A, with Nico Paz at the heart of it all.

The young Argentine was sensational against Juventus, creating the opener with a superb cross before capping the night with a stunning solo goal.

A statement performance from one of the brightest emerging talents.

Midfield: Christoph Baumgartner (RB Leipzig)

Leipzig have continued their impressive run of form under new coach Ole Werner with a 2-1 win against Hamburg.

Baumgartner scored both of Leipzig’s goals either side of half time, taking his tally up to four in seven.

Midfield: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Playing slightly deeper in Der Klassiker didn’t blunt Harry Kane’s impact.

The England captain – playing behind Nicolas Jackson as a No.10 – was instrumental in Bayern’s 2-1 win, winning 10 of 13 duels, drawing six fouls and grabbing his customary goal.

His intelligent link-up play helped carve out Michael Olise’s winner; another example of Kane’s all-round game.

Forward: Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Another weekend, another brace.

Erling Haaland continued his fine goalscoring form with two more against Everton, taking his league tally to 11 already.

Every time City scores, it’s almost expected that Haaland’s name will be on the sheet.

Forward: Joaquin Panichelli (Strasbourg)

Liam Rosenior’s Strasbourg are taking the fight to PSG and Marseille this season, and leading the charge is Argentinian number nine Panichelli.

The hapless Lucas Chevalier saw two of Panichelli’s efforts rattle the back of his net on Friday as Strasbourg raced into a 3-1 lead at the Parc Des Princes, before PSG pegged them back for 3-3.

Forward: Antony (Real Betis)

In a weekend packed with late drama, Antony stole the headlines in Spain.

The former Manchester United winger struck twice in the closing stages against Villarreal to earn Betis a valuable point and keep their European hopes alive.
